8 Things That’ll Never Change In Our Life
A few days ago, while writing in my journal, I pondered over ways to improve my current circumstances. Your present situation is the sum total of choices you made in the past. that means, If I want a different life or different results in the future, I should initiate changes in my present reality that align with my desired future.
However, this time, instead of focusing on what I could do differently, I started writing down a list of things that will never change — aspects that, despite an uncertain future, I’ll always want in my life, no matter the circumstances in my external or internal world.
There is a famous quote by Jeff that I’d like to mention here which became a foundation for the success of Amazon and explain what I’m trying to say in a better way.
“I very frequently get the question: ‘What’s going to change in the next 10 years?’ And that is a very interesting question; it’s a very common one. I almost never get the question: ‘What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?’ And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two — because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time. … [I]n our retail business, we know that customers want low prices, and I know that’s going to be true 10 years from now. They want fast delivery; they want vast selection. It’s impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, ‘Jeff I love Amazon; I just wish the prices were a little higher,’ [or] ‘I love Amazon; I just wish you’d deliver a little more slowly.’ Impossible. When you have something that you know is true, even over the long term, you can afford to put a lot of energy into it.”
― Jeff Bezos
So, here’s the list of things that I feel will not change in the next 10 years of my life — tenets that I’m sure most of you too will find relatable:
- Life doesn’t stop for anybody, so don’t waste time and energy on things that don’t make you smarter, richer, or happier.
- Life doesn’t play fair — it is indifferent, like nature — so work with what you have instead of hoping for things to be different.
- Your value in the world depends upon how useful you are to others.
- Money buys freedom!
- It matters how you make others feel — they might not remember most of their conversation with you, but they’ll remember the feeling they had from being around you.
- Gentle manners and a friendly aura must be cultivated — to improve relationships and professional collaborations/partnerships.
- Things that matter the most:
- Career (that gives you meaning and purpose)
- Lover/partner
- Family
- Friends
- Free time (reserved for reading, leisure, travel, etc.)
8. A healthy body and calm, peaceful mind are invaluable assets.
In the coming years of my life, whenever I’m feeling lost or pulled in all directions, I’ll revisit these 8 tenets to gauge how far I’ve progressed. All of these 8 aspects are within my control to improve upon, or at the very least, I have some degree of influence over them.
So whenever external circumstances start to bother me, I will know which things will always remain important in my life and where I should direct my energy.
